A More Softe Harmonye:
Music from the Court of Isabella d’Este
Isabella d'Este, Marchioness of Mantua, collected art, musicians and artists like da Vinci and Titian. She was a demanding, well-informed patroness; "We require that when it is strung it will be two steps higher than the viola you made, which is a little low for our voice," goes her order for a new lute. The book that defines the "Renaissance Man," Castiglione’s The Courtier, praises the singing of Isabella’s employee Marco Cara by name, but recommends older courtiers play lute solos only in public, since they would look pathetic singing of love in the company of young women.
