A representative of the Indore gharana, and hailing from a nine-generation lineage of sarangi players, Sultan Khan tutored under such legendary names as Gopal Mishra of Benaras, Sageeruddin Khan of Kolkata and Bade Sabri Khan of Ambala. He is known for his emotional depth and technical control over this difficult string instrument while also excelling in a wide range of music making on an international scale from performing with Ravi Shankar on former Beatle, George Harrisons 1974 Dark Horse World Tour to composing music for films such as Merchant-Ivorys In Custody and Gandhi, apart form Hindi films, such as the memorable Pakeezah, Umrao Jaan and Ram Teri Ganga Maili. At this concert, Sultan Khan will team up with one of Rajasthans finest sarangi players, Lakha Khan Manganiyar, who has played the instrument in music albums such as, Tunes of the Dunes. To achieve this collaboration, the two maestros spent a considerable amount of time, exploring folk themes and designing a repertoire that is suitably reflective of their combined talents. The Manganiyars are from western Rajasthan (from areas adjoining the Indo-Pakistan border).and traditionally, purveyors of music to local feudal families. The songs they sing are transmitted from one generation to the next. Combining semi-classical and folk, the performance will evoke the spirit of the desert.
