Watch for my story, "Queen Of Joy"

Author, Dixie Owens will be discussing and signing copies of her novel,
Becoming Kate, during the November 5 First Friday Art Walk at Aquarius Books at 528 NE E St. in Grants Pass.
Becoming Kate is a stunning debut novel by local resident Owens. It was published on July 8 of this year and a second edition is now on its way to the printer. In addition, a producer has negotiated with her publisher for movie rights.
The story is about identity, family and what it really means to be alive. Twenty-nine-year old Elizabeth “Liz” Lindsay, a busy wife, student, and mother of two lively children, runs to do errands. She is in an accident. She regains consciousness three days later at Stanford Hospital. Strangers are hovering over her calling her Kate. She learns that ‘Liz’ perished in the accident and, as an organ donor, provided a healthy brain for Kate, an 11-year old whose brain had atrophied after years of illness. The memory of the donor was supposed to be erased, but …
“The premise of the book came from a dream that I had 37 years ago – when my children were young,” Owens says. “It lay in the back of my mind all these years. And then, three years ago newscasters were reporting recent successes with hand, face, and brain cell transplants. When I heard those reports, the very real nightmare resurfaced and I told my adult children about it.
“Mom, you should write a book,” my daughter Carol said. “The premise is unique and timely. Before you know it, brain transplants will be a reality.”
“My daughter has a nose for these things,” Owens said. “She has an editing business and many of her authors have been published. So, I followed her sage advice.”
Owens has written two children’s picture books, yet unpublished, and is currently writing a sequel to Becoming Kate and a tween novel.
She and her spouse, Howard Owens, moved to the area from Sacramento shortly after she retired as deputy director of Public Affairs for the CA Employment Development Department. “We chose Grants Pass because of its beauty and its location. We have three adult children (and multiple grandchildren) in Northern CA and four (with multiple grandchildren) in the Eugene/Springfield area. Living in Grants Pass gives us easy access to all of them. But it’s far enough that phone calls and planning must take place for visits.”

Karen Jordann
"Art is creativity from the heart. It includes lines, shapes, curves, colors, tones and values. Art is every movement we make with expression of who we are in this world. Art is a vast variety of media, subjects, talent, and for some, acceptability. It includes everything from the divine to the astonishing. We all know art is in the eye and the heart of the beholderl The challenge is for each of us to find the creativity within to draw, write, paint, or appreaciate all the beauty in our Universe. The magic of seeing is the gift of art and it can only enhance our lives beyond all we can imagine." Excerpts from an article written by Karen Jordann
Karen loves the creative process as she works in various media, pastel, acrylics, and graphite drawing. She has done a series of landscapes and another of animals with several ribbons awarded for her efforts as well as abstracts and new works in collage/acrylics. She started late in life, at 60, studying with Tee Corrine, Albert Handel and Roni Marsh, and, most recently, at Southern Oregon Art Academy. She has just recently started acknowledging herself as an artist although many have done so much earlier. Her home is filled with her art work as well as that of her peers and family. Karen still works full time as a nurse but anticipates retirement as an opportunity to do so many more of the paintings she holds in her imagination, ready to put on canvas. She loves to share her studio and the creative process with others and looks forward to more time to do so as well as take more classes in the next year. Her paintings are on display in the gallery at Trinity Valley Pharmacy in Grants Pass.

Marianne Moskowitz is an artist and writer who lives in Sunny Valley. She has
enjoyed drawing and watercolor in her early youth and has returned to studying
and practicing her art since moving to Southern Oregon twelve years ago,
initially taking classes with the late Tee Corinne, a gifted and inspired teacher.

Marianne has exhibited her drawings and paintings in a number of local venues, including the former Rogue Coffee, the Valley Art Gallery in Medford, Grants Pass Art Museum, Rogue River Public Library, the former Book Stop, Josephine County Fair, Rogue Community College, and at Schmidt House. She has also published a book (J Mar Publications) entitled Seasoned Memories, which, in addition to short prose pieces and poems, contains a number of her drawings.

Sat. Nov. 6th ~ 1 pm ~ Upstairs Aquarius Books & Gifts
November is National Novel Writing Month,
or as it has been known since 1999 by The Office of Letters and Lights in San Francisco, "NaNoWriMo." Today, millions of participants all over the world participate in NaNoWriMo each year, trying feverishly, and usually with the consumption of far too much caffeine, to write 50,000 words of a novel in the month of November. For those who like math, that's an average of 1,667 words per day over the 30 days. To support each other through this insanity, one tool in the WriMo's (as participants are called) arsenal is the "write-in," fashioned after historical "sit-ins," where a number of WriMos come together in a public place and work on their NaNo novels in the support of a group setting. The first Grants Pass write-in will be right here at Aquarius on Saturday, November 6th at 1 p.m. You DON'T have to be signed up on www.nanowrimo.org in order to come. Just come on out and Write-In hostess Juliet Meredith will help you get signed up and get started. It's a great way to find out how many words you can write in a month, not to mention just an hysterically good time writing and meeting and conversing with other writers locally and through the NaNoWriMo forums. Come on out this Saturday, November 6th at 1 p.m. to Aquarius to learn more!
