Circus Celebration at Playland-Not-At-The-Beach July 18, 2009

On Saturday and Sunday, July 18 - 19, Playland-Not-At-The-Beach is holding a circus celebration! Everyone loves the circus, and this weekend will be very special -- we will be celebrating the circus that was based right here in El Cerrito! Ten years ago a brand new circus made its way through Northern California. Known as Circus Chimera, the show played for 11 days at the old El Cerrito Plaza. Families loved the show and came back to see it many times. Few people know that the circus was headquartered inside the Playland-Not-at-the-Beach building here in El Cerrito. This weekend we will be showing rare movies of the circus acts and discussing the history of Circus Chimera. Our Guest of Honor is Mike Gorman who was the Director of Marketing and Promotions for Chimera. Guests will receive circus souvenirs.

Circus Vargas is currently touring the Bay Area with their 40th anniversary edition. The show will be at Hilltop Mall starting on July 23rd. Playland-Not-at-the-Beach will be hosting a party for the Circus Vargas performers here in our Museum of Fun. Anyone who visits Playland between now and the opening of the show will receive a discount pass to attend the 40th anniversary edition of Circus Vargas.

The special events of Circus Celebration are in addition to all of Playland's regular attractions. Guests pay one low price to enter and can stay all day: $10 for children and seniors, and $15 for general admission. Playland-Not-at-the-Beach is a nonprofit Museum of Fun. Designed and built entirely by volunteers, the 20+ interactive exhibits celebrate the magic and history of America's bygone amusements -- circuses, carnivals, magic, sides shows, penny arcades, amusement devices, pinball arcades, haunted houses, and beautiful art everywhere. Our goal is to educate newer generations about the bygone days and allow those who remember Whitney's Playland and the Sutro Baths the opportunity to recapture the glorious sights and sounds of that marvelous era.
