The Circus Comes to Town: Largest Gallery Space
in Detroit Opens With
One-Night-Only Exhibition

Detroit— Come one, come all! The Detroit art
world is braced for the first
showing in the city’s newest and largest exhibit
space—the 4731 Gallery, 4th
Floor. The one-night-only event will be held on
June 5, from 6-10pm.
Conceived by young Detroit artist Philip
Stead, “Circus” is a rolling art
show that reunites former locals Erin Maloney
and Lindsey Wolkowicz. The
three will present their interpretations of the
circus theme, ranging from
an abandoned circus to an abandoned city.

“The space itself, when we first acquired it,
seemed a symbol for the city,”
said Stead. “Because it’s an abandoned space, a
symbol of negativity, we
viewed it as a visual embodiment of how we three
see Detroit: color emerging
out of decay, life emerging from negativity.”

Local musician Robert W. Vernon and Manhattan-
based Dominican jazz phenom
Wesley Reynoso will accompany on accordion and
pump organ throughout the
night. Both will be performing their own live,
improvisational circus music.

According to Stead, “You’ll find colors in the
ash, renaissance and ruin.
And the next day, there will be nothing left but
wagon tracks and popcorn
sacks. So if you’re the last to leave, please
turn out the lights.”

The 4731 Gallery is located at 4731 Grand River,
between 14th and 15th
Streets. Directions: Take the Lodge Freeway or I-
75 south to Grand River,
turn right and proceed one mile past the Motor
City Casino. Parking is
available in the adjacent lot.
