Welcome to the IV Cinemaissí and the II Cinemaissíto

The theme of this year´s Festival of Latin American and Caribbean Cinema is "The Street". The films present a complex and unpredictable stage full of cultural, religious and political expressions, and reflect the new tendencies and perspectives of Latin American cinema. This year Cinemaissi ´s opening film will be the Brazilian Tropa de Elite (2007) by the director José Padilha, and the festival closes with the award-winning Viva Cuba (2004) by Juan Carlos Cremata.

Children, small and not so small, will have their own event at Annantalo, where the II Cinemaissíto presents a beautiful selection of Mexican short films made by children of La Matatena Association. There are also fantastic animations made in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Finland, Uruguay and Cuba. One of these is the classic Cuban animation Elpidio Valdés (1979). The films shown during Cinemaissíto are for children under 7 years, for schoolchildren, as well as for teens. And of course, adults are also warmly welcome to enjoy the films.

The debates being organised in conjunction with this year's festival, will consider the stereotypes and prejudices, and encourage intercultural learning by sharing experiences about the difficulties and achievements in Latin America and the Caribbean regions. This year's panels will consist of women poets who write about the silences of the streets; the visual artists whose artwork isn't being sold from the walls nor the sidewalks, and finally, the media of the streets. This autumn the films are placed in a setting which sometimes belongs to everybody, sometimes to the chosen few, and often, to nobody.
