When we think of Mexican beer, we generally jump right over to the margaritas. But what if you love Mexican food? Garrett Olive notes, "Few wines can handle truly spicy food, but the right beer can match perfectly."

Thus we hatched our great plan to celebrate Cinco de Mayo 2009!

Mexican food is incredibly diverse. Many Americans think of talking Chihuahuas when they think of Mexican food. This is the type of Mexican food where they find ever creative ways to combine the same seven ingredients. Thankfully, true modern Mexican cuisine is much more varying and nuanced than this.

Variety is the spice of life, as they say. We will show you how to pair different kinds of Mexican food, with varying degrees of spiciness, with a wide range of complementary beers.

¡Arriba y vamanos! Our own Vicki Weisent, "beer goddess" and baker presents. We've tapped into a great selection of food-friendly beers, and paired them with a fantastic Mexican menu from Grovewood's award-winning kitchen. A complimentary recipe book of the dishes served (but adapted for the home kitchen) will be presented.

Negra Modelo (Mexico, 5.4 ABV)...Guacamole Two Ways.

Cantillon Gueuze (Belgium, 5 ABV)...Shrimp Ceviche "Cocktail" with plantain chips.

New Holland Sun Dog Amber (Holland, Michigan, 6 ABV)...Traditional Tortilla Soup with cilantro crème fraîche.

Erdinger Weissbier (Germany, 5.3 ABV)...Veracruz-style Halibut Cheeks, in banana leaf, steamed rice.

Founder's Porter (Grand Rapids, Michigan, 5.1 ABV)...Pulled Pork and Gouda "Torta," with papaya-mustard glaze.

Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout (Petaluma, California, 7.99 ABV)...Mexican Chocolate Torte, cinnamon-spiced pecans.

Fellow food tourists, we're making a run for the border. I hope you can join us!
