Ceremonial and samurai dolls have long been a traditional and unique expression of Japanese culture. 'The Chrysanthemum and the Sword' showcases the extraordinary collection of "hina" dolls, donated to the Academy by the Tsuji family, dating from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji. Other dolls in the collection include "kyoho-bina" dolls in enameled wood, metal and embroidered silk, ca. 1680, to contemporary mechanical dolls that serve tea.
