Prokofiev’s choral and orchestral score for Eisenstein’s film Alexander Nevsky, depicting a medieval Russian prince’s heroic defence of his homeland, is music of suitably epic scope, encompassing the warlike shouts of the rival armies, a brutal battle on a frozen lake, mourning for the dead and Nevsky’s triumphant homecoming. A typical mix of tunefulness and sheer expressive power, it is also a reminder that great film music does not have to come from Hollywood.
