Celebrate Chinese New Year by creating a Chinese paper lantern at Oceanside Museum of Art’s Free Family Art Day February 7th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Kids can also learn how to paint Chinese characters at our Calligraphy Workshop. Members of the Mira Costa Chinese Club will guide children and their families through the traditional art of paper lanterns. Chinese paper lanterns are more than just decorations; since 250 B.C. they have been used to celebrate births, deaths, weddings, social status and approaching danger. After making the paper lantern you can personalize it with drawings and poems. Bring the whole family to this free art-making day at the museum where children are encouraged to view the artwork featured in the exhibitions, Industrial Alchemy: John Zabrucky, Plastic Fantastic: Allison Renshaw, Discoveries in Dystopia: Greg Brotherton, and Selections from the Permanent Collection. Family Art Day includes all necessary materials and is free to the public. Children can enjoy an informational docent tour geared specifically for kids at 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
