Mikuláš, St. Nicholas' day, is on the 5th of December and marks the start of Christmas for Czech people. Saint Nicholas Day is a day of festivities for children and is celebrated throughout Europe. In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Mikuláš is often accompanied by an Angel (anděl) who acts as a counterbalance to the ominous devil known as Knecht Ruprecht (čert).

They quiz children about whether they’ve behaved themselves over the last twelve months and then reward or punish them for good or bad behavior respectively. Good behavior is rewarded with sweets or small toys; bad behavior is punished with coal or potatoes. Children also receive St. Nicholas presents from their parents and relatives.
