Premiering in 1975 and the hit of the 1997 Broadway season, CHICAGO The Musical won six Tony Awards including Best Revival and later the Academy Award as Best Picture of the Year.

In roaring twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband to take the rap...until he finds out he's been duped. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another "Merry Murderess" Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the "American Dream": fame, fortune and acquittal. This sharp edged show features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse.

The story is a satire based on the corruption in the criminal justice system and the logic of a "celebrity criminal". Chicago is based on a 1926 play by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about the criminals she reported on. The basis of the play came from Maurine's Chicago Tribune coverage of the 1924 trials of Beulah Annan & Belva Gaertner.
