CANADA'S ENERGY FUTURE: GLOBAL MARKETS,
THE UNITED STATES, AND BEYOND
The Honorable Joe Oliver, PC, MP, Minister of Natural Resources, Canada
Canada and the United States have a long history of partnership and the two countries represent the largest trade relationship in the world. Energy security is an increasingly important factor on both sides of the border, especially as Canada has become the largest supplier of oil, natural gas, and uranium to the United States. The joint commitment to reliable and clean energy development remains a priority for both President Obama and Prime Minister Harper. Yet 2013 represents a critical year as President Obama contemplates the United States’ involvement with the Keystone XL oil pipeline expansion. While Canada awaits a decision, they are aggressively working to create new markets to diversify their energy exports, especially to Asian Pacific countries, including China, India, and Japan. What is next for the energy partnership between the United States and Canada?
