The Saturday, August 27 OPENeducation event at the UC Berkeley Art Museum, which will in part trace the genealogy of Chez Panisse on the occasion of the restaurant’s 40th anniversary, includes free public access to a “library” featuring books about Chez Panisse, its vision of the food world, plus cookbooks and other publications which members of the restaurant’s extended family have found to be inspirational.

The "library" will be supplied with books from Moe’s Books of Berkeley. Books cannot be checked out, but there will be a free copier available for visitors to use. The "librarian" for the day will be Asiya Wadud, founder of Forage Oakland. The entire day-long outdoor event (11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) is free and open to the public, but advance reservations are required and can be made at http://www.ticketweb.com/snl/EventListings.action?pl=panisse&orgId=130613.

Other highlights of the OPENeducation event at the UC Berkeley Art Museum will include outdoor spaces transformed into edible gardens, interactive cooking installations in collaboration with students, farmers, educators, cooks and artists, and the screening of the Les Blank film "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe" in which Alice Waters cooked a real shoe after film director Herzog lost a bet.

More information can be found on the OPENeducation (http://openrestaurant.org/2011/06/26/opened-education-as-experience/) and Chez Panisse Foundation (http://www.chezpanissefoundation.org/40th) web sites. The UC Berkeley Art Museum is located at 2626 Bancroft Way in Berkeley, California.
