Newtown Arts Company Presents the Classic Family Comedy "Cheaper by the Dozen" on Stage at the Historic Newtown Theatre August 7-13
The stage at the Newtown Theatre will once again jump back to life in August when Newtown Arts Company presents the classic family comedy "Cheaper by the Dozen." The theatre's stage will be filled with laughter, confusion and energy as the story unfolds about a very (very) large family during the 1920s.
Amusing and endearing, this beloved family show tells the tale of the real-life Gilbreth Family as recalled by two of the siblings, Frank Gibreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. The father was a time-efficiency engineer, and a home life with twelve children was sure to try his theories and patience. Add to that the hopes for boyfriends by his teenage daughters and you could expect lots of confusion to abound. It didn't help to have a dog that seemed to love bothering Dad the most, either!
The limited run of the show will be for one week only, with opening night on Friday, August 8th and continuing until Wednesday, August 13th (no show on Monday the 11th). There will also be a preview performance Thursday, August 7th. The play will be staged at the lovely, historic Newtown Theatre, 120 North State Street in Newtown, PA. It's a classic place to see a show, on a stage that dates back to 1883.
The play marks the fourth show of Newtown Arts Company's 2008 season, with the number of plays doubling this year in response to enthusiastic response to their productions at Newtown Theatre last year. The theatre group was named one of the top five Delaware Valley theatre groups in an on-line poll conducted by myfoxphilly.com**, and was the highest ranked group in Bucks County. The group's fine productions and the wonderful ambience of the historic Newtown Theatre make it an enjoyable experience for theatregoers.
The large cast includes Cody Ayrer, Sam Balka, Devon Bilyk, Ann D'Silva, Seth Epstein, Joanie Keehn, Luke Lucerne, Bill Sismour and Greg Sowiak, all from Newtown; Gary LaSasso from Yardley; Isabella Scotti, Laura Scotti and Olivia Scotti of Richboro; Lauren Sauers from Holland; Joshua Fleck from Horsham, Caitlin Spiess of Furlong and Mike Beck from Hartsville. Many members of the cast have been seen in productions at both Newtown Theatre and at other playhouses in the area. The play is directed by John Rasiej of Wycombe.
The director holds a special fondness for the play and said, "I read the book "Cheaper by the Dozen" at least twenty times when I was growing up and always loved the movie telling the story of this large yet close family. You could always feel how much the family pulled for each other while dealing with the issues of so many heads under one roof. I want to make sure that the audience gets to not just witness the story being told but really feel as if they are watching this family come to life on stage."
Now in its third year performing at Newtown Theatre, Newtown Arts Company has been performing at various venues in Newtown since 1983. Proceeds from its shows go into a scholarship fund which benefits young students pursuing higher education in the arts. Since 1983 they have awarded a total of over $45,000 in scholarships. Members and scholarship winners often perform at local community events in addition to the plays and musicals the company produces. The company is also a charter member of the Newtown Community Foundation.
Tickets are available for $15 for general admission, $20 reserved front orchestra, and $30 for the unique Row I seats. For years this eighth row at Newtown Theatre has been a fan favorite for the extra legroom created by an aisle that runs in front.
Performance dates and times are opening night on Friday, August 8th at 8:00 p.m., Saturday the 9th at 8:00, Sunday matinee August 10th at 3:00, Tuesday the 12th at 7:30 and closing on Wednesday August 13th at 7:30. In addition, there will be a preview performance Thursday, August 7th at 7:30, with reduced prices of $12, $15 and $20 for tickets.
