Charles Gute's exhibition 'The Corrections' mines the overlapping terrain between his longtime conceptual art practice and his day job as a freelance editor of art publications. In his ongoing series of works on paper titled 'Revisions and Queries,' Gute takes publisher's proofs from art books and removes all content except for his own proofreader's notations, leaving abstract, colorful constellations of marks that resonate with their original subject matter in unpredictable and sometimes humorous ways. In a new series of canvas wall works, however, Gute raises the philosophical stakes by exposing errors in texts that are not about art but are already works of art themselves. Here Gute has "corrected" historical text-based works that were originally presented with typos or grammatical errors, thus playfully questioning notions of authorship and whether existing works of art can or should be altered.
