THE MUSIC:
Charanga Danzon is a fluid ensemble of wonderful Seattle-based musicians led by violinist Irene Mitri, with a repertoire of Cuban music including traditional charanga, son/danzon, cha-cha-cha, classical, and jazz. This concert features:
Irene Mitri (violin), Jim O'Halloran (flutes), Fred Hoadley (piano, tres), Michael Nicolella (guitar), Andy Schloss (percussion), Ben Verdier (bass), and Pedro Vargas (percussion).

THE FILM:
YANK TANKS, directed by David Schendel

Winner, Best Documentary at: Cinequest 2002, La Latino International Film Festival 2002, Palm Springs Hispanic Film Festival 2002, Lake Placid Film Forum, 2002. Official selection at: Montreal World Film Festival 2002, Havana Film Festival 2002, Florida Film Festival 2002, Munich Film Festival 2002, Exground Film Festival 2002.

David Schendel: “One of the Cuban directors came up to me and said 'Gracias. This film is the best film made about our culture by a foreigner that I have ever seen. And that includes the Buena Vista Social Club.'”

Yank Tanks is the first in-depth look into the largest, living, automobile museum in the world and its curators. After the Cuban revolution, the United States began its four-decade-long trade embargo, stranding 150,000 American cars. Stunning footage captures these exotic and colorful cars that still roam the island paradise.

The hard-working and resourceful Cubans cherish these American cars and take the phrase ‘living with less’ to a new level. These classic Caddies, Buicks and Hudsons still cruise Havana's sun-splashed streets, thanks to the limitless imagination and creativity of the underground network of mechanics, inventors and artists who keep them running with no access to parts or conventional materials. Including rare, never-before-seen footage from the Cuban National Television Archive, along with the soundtrack of contemporary Cuban music.
