Chanukuh 2007 Extravaganza

co-sponsored by the Jewish Dialogue Group and
Kol Tzedek West Philadelphia Synagogue

What: Two amazing performances:

*Shtreiml, a Montreal/Philly-based klezmer band that offers a high-octane mix of not-so-traditional Eastern-European Jewish and Turkish music.

*A special preview of the new West Philly production of March of the Falsettos.

Plus delicious food (including rugelach from West Philly’s own Four Worlds Bakery that would make your grandmother weep), Chanukah gifts from Bindlestiff Books, and some surprises. Children of all ages are welcome.

Suggested donation: $18 per person -- more if you can, no one turned away for lack of funds.

About the performances:

>Shtreiml <

Founded in 2002, Montreal/Philly-based Shtreiml offers a high-octane mix of not-so-traditional Eastern-European Jewish and Turkish music. Led by harmonica innovator Jason Rosenblatt, Shtreiml's blues-rock infused set delivers a new look at some centuries old folk music. Joined by Rachel Lemisch (trombone), Thierry Arsenault (drums), Adam Stotland (bass) and Brooklyn-based freak Michael Winograd (clarinet) the group's set has been labeled "explosive" (Halifax Chronicle Herald) and "exhilarating" (Rootsworld).

A recent review said it best: "Shtreiml came on and jet-propelled us into a parallel universe with an exotic mix of Turkish folk music and klezmer tunes. Theirs is truly a wild repertoire."

>March of the Falsettos<

A beloved 1981 queer, Jewish off-Broadway musical, March of the Falsettos is the first part of the Tony Award-winning Falsetto cycle, named by the New York Times as “more powerful than any other American musical of its day.”
A new West Philly theater troupe plans to stage the show in early 2008. Cast members Jan Brotman, Rob Goldberg, Sarah Hunt, Adam Remich, and Rich Wexler will offer a short sample to kick off the event!
