For two millennia, Mary Magdalene has intrigued the world with her beauty, her courage, and her faith, yet even today she remains a mystery. She has inspired some of the greatest artists to try to capture her in their work, yet she remains elusive, shifting personas as each artist applied a personal interpretation to her image. Some artists depicted Mary as the repentant sinner weeping with contrition, or as the beloved disciple who fearlessly remained at the foot of the Cross. Others depicted her as the Apostla of Easter morning joyfully announcing the miracle of the Resurrection or as the reclusive beauty living in the wilderness clothed only in her glorious hair. This lecture examines the many faces of Mary Magdalene through art works that celebrate the life of this remarkable woman and her important role in Western history.
