Cemetery Ride
8 am, Sunday, Oct 22

In honor of Holloween, Foster & Anita would like to take the group on a tour of the final resting places of the namesakes for many of the streets we pedal across, parks we pass by as well as the gravesites of KC famous.
We will start with a tour of Forest Hill/Calvary Cemetery where you can pay your respects to John Wornall (Wornall Road), Seth Ward (Ward Parkway), Volker (you get the idea). Here you can visit the tombstone & monument to Satchel Paige. There are many other KC notables buried here -- as well as interesting memorials. See if you can find the Mickey Mouse tombstone.
Then we will ride to Union Cemetary -- a very old and historical burial ground. Here we can visit the grave sites of William Gillis & George Caleb Bingham, among others.
We will then stop at the Filling Station, fna Coffee Girls (30th & Gillham) for coffee, pastries and comfort stop.
After our repast, we will ride to Cliff Drive, hopefully to observe the fall folliage in peak colors. Our final cemetary, and in Anita's opinion - grandest, will be Elmwood Cemetary, where Jacob Loose, Kersey Coates and Mary Atkins (Nelson Atkins Art Museum) among many others are interred under spectacular monuments.
We've not measured the distance, but I am guessing the mileage at 25-30 miles give or take. If you are looking for an intense cardio workout, this probably isn't your ride. For those who are interested in something to celebrate the season, with a little history, we think you will have fun. If we are rained out, we'll try again on 10/29.
