Young Israeli cellist Amit Peled has been compared to the legendary Rostropovich for his fire, flair and exuberant performance style. For this San Francisco Performances' concert, he presents works by Beethoven, Schumann, Ligeti and Eccles plus two Jewish-themed compositions: Stutschewsky's "Hassidic Suite" and Ernest Bloch's "Schelomo: Hebraic Rhapsody."

Rounding out the program for the March 15 concert are Beethoven's "Sonata for Pianoforte and Cello in C Major, Op. 102, No. 1"; Schumann's "Fantasiestucke, Op. 73"; Ligeti's "Sonata for Solo Cello"; and Eccles' "Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor." The accompanist is another Israeli musician, Eli Kalman.

In addition to performing as a soloist with major orchestras worldwide, Peled is a frequent guest artist, giving master classes and performing at such important festivals as the Marlboro Music Festival and England's Prussia Cove. He is also on the faculty of the prestigious Peabody Conservatory. This season he released a CD, "The Jewish Soul," on Centaur Records. An advocate of Israeli music, he has recorded the Cello Concert by Mark Kopytman with the Tel Aviv Soloists for the JMC label.

Pianist Kalman has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician in Romania, Israel, Germany, Hungary, the United States and Canada. This concert is a San Francisco debut for both artists.
