Do you care for your parents as well as your children?

If so, you’re one of approximately 20 million Americans included in the sandwich generation and the month of July is dedicated to recognizing this important segment of the population. This year, celebrate on Wednesday, July 29th with GRISWOLD SPECIAL CARE Director Michele Running for an exciting square dance with a live “caller” and barbeque at the Libertyville Senior Center located at 135 W. Church Street. They will be serving pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, cole slaw and ice cream sandwiches for all to enjoy. The event starts at 12pm and everyone from age nine to ninety-nine is invited!

“We’re looking forward to getting the word out about Sandwich Generation Month and celebrating those individuals involved,” said Running. “This is just one way we’re able to give back to our community and we hope to continue doing so for years to come.”

GRISWOLD SPECIAL CARE created Sandwich Generation Month and its corresponding website – www.SandwichGenerationMonth.org – in 2007 and over the past two years, notoriety has increased to include proclamations from six states plus other cities/municipalities and events in numerous communities across the country, like Running’s. In addition, Sandwich Generation Month also highlights the importance of GRISWOLD SPECIAL CARE’s Donor Closet, a directory of resources for the donation of personal living equipment and the location of the devices needed for improving the quality of life of an aging adult or person with disabilities, and the CaringTimes newsletter, an educational resource for family caregivers assisting elders and individuals living with a disability.

As the sponsor and creator of Sandwich Generation Month, GRISWOLD SPECIAL CARE also gives major hospitals, assisted living facilities, physician’s offices and other organizations the opportunity to host quilts comprised of handmade patches which serve as a tribute to the sandwich generation, clients, caregivers, directors, client families, referral sources and others associated with home care and a reminder to all Americans of the warmth, security and peace caregiving provides. Individuals can even design and register their own Sandwich Generation Month events by utilizing the resources available at www.SandwichGenerationMonth.org.

“Members of the sandwich generation play a vital role in so many lives and we wanted to commemorate and honor them in a way they’ve never experienced before,” said Dr. Kent Griswold, president and CEO of GRISWOLD SPECIAL CARE. “Through Sandwich Generation Month, these individuals are recognized for what they do and the immeasurable impact they have on the lives of others.”
