Cecilia Beaux: American Figure May 18, 2007

This exhibit presents one of the most comprehensive critical examinations of the work of internationally acclaimed figure painter Cecilia Beaux (1855-1942) in more than 30 years. 'Cecilia Beaux: American Figure Painter' will illuminate Beaux's work by exploring issues of gender, class and the importance of place in relation to Beaux's identity and reputation as the leading female artist working in the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century. The exhibition will feature Beaux's highly regarded portraits in the context of her commercial and student works and figure paintings, as well as landscape and still-life compositions.
