The 4-H Dog Program Registration Night is scheduled for Thursday, March 5, 2009, from 6-8pm, at the Frank Bratt Ag Center in Jamestown, NY. Youth interested in participating in the 4-H Dog Program should bring general information about their animal and a copy of verification of current rabies vaccination for each dog enrolling. Enrolling your dog in the 4-H Dog Program costs $20 for your first dog and $5 for each additional dog. As a dog program participant you will have the opportunity to train and learn to show in a variety of dog classes including obedience, grooming and handling, rally and agility. Youth are not required to own their dog but must have access to the dog at all times for training opportunities.

The philosophy of the 4-H Dog Program is not the training of the dogs, but rather the training of young people. The dog is used as a medium for this training. In the process of working with their pet youth will experience challenges, responsibilities, successes, and failures, which will help them grow and mature as a person. We hope to have all 4-H members who participate in the Dog Program encounter an enjoyable learning process. Working with a dog can be an extremely rewarding opportunity, as well as a life long skill. Understanding the way a dog thinks and reacts to praise and reward will benefit youth throughout their lives, and with all animals that may cross their path. They will also learn the importance of patience when working with people. Being able to relate to a dog is a wonderful part of a person’s life. Members of the 4-H Dog Program Committee hope to assist in providing the most rewarding program possible. Our leaders find it personally rewarding working with the young people and we hope that the young people they work with feel the same.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County 4-H Youth Development Program is a series of opportunities made available to youth ages 5-19 years of age. 4-H is an opportunity for youth to “learn by doing.” Chautauqua County 4-H is fortune to have a successful program which offers youth a variety of opportunities to learn through research-based curricula in animal rearing, crafts, conservation, and leadership. Chautauqua County has 30 individual 4-H clubs and offers a variety of county wide projects. Youth involved in 4-H may be learning how to speak in public, raise a calf, or train their dog. Various program registrations occur during the early months of each year.
