GAGE OPDENBROUW
Silence and Distance / New Paintings

Charles Campbell Gallery announces two concurrent shows: Celebrating the centennial of the California College of the Arts, ‘CCA At CCG’ is a group exhibition of CCA faculty and alumni exhibited at Campbell Gallery since 1972; ‘Silence And Distance’ is a solo show of new paintings by Gage Opdenbrouw.

Many well-known and important California artists of the past one hundred years are associated with the CCA, both as students and faculty. Charles Campbell has represented and exhibited several of them during the past thirty-five years and this exhibition commemorates on the occasion of the CCA centennial this ongoing relationship.

The first show at Charles Campbell Gallery was with Nathan Oliveira in 1972, and this Spring 2007 we had a solo show for Michael Beck, both are CCA alumni and this indicates the breadth and scope of our associations with CCA. Other artists included in this show are Paul Wonner, Stan Washburn, Wayne Thiebaud, Louis B. Siegriest, Gordon Onslow-Ford, Nathan Oliveira, Manuel Neri, Eileen Moderbacher, Christopher Brown, Kay Bradner, Elmer Bischoff, Michael Beck, John Battenberg and others.

“Silence And Distance” features new sky, sea, land and cityscape oil paintings by Gage Opdenbrouw. This series demonstrates the artists’ versatility in subject, style and tone: they may be abstract or photographic, intimate or grand scale, and evoke emotions ranging from reminiscence to inspiration. The artist comments: “A common concern in traditional landscape painting is to capture a certain kind of light, fleeting effects of the atmosphere and color. While I am concerned with that to a certain degree, my aim is to distill such things to a point where they become less literal and more potent.”

Gage Opdenbrouw was born and raised in San Jose, California in 1977 and lives in San Francisco. He has had solo and group shows in the Bay Area and across the country. Gage is not affiliated with the CCA though his work represents an evolution and continuation for the gallery.
