CBE: 30 YEARS OF RESISTANCE, VISION & HOPE October 30, 2008

For 30 years, Communities for a Better Environment has reached, educated and mobilized hundreds of thousands for environmental health and justice. CBE fought to both minimize pollution in low-income communities of color and mobilize these communities around the environmental issues that affect them. To this end, CBE combines organizing, research and litigation efforts to tackle environmental racism and this combination has created a string of victories: We have shut-down cancer-causing chrome facilities, prevented the construction of power plants, helped community members speak-out during public hearings concerning local polluters, forced companies to comply to federal emissions laws, and developed innovative environmental policy that takes into account the disproportionate burden placed on low-income neighborhoods. With the help of CBE, at-risk populations in California have found the resources needed to fight pollution and safe-guard the health of their families.

Thirty Years of Resistance, Hope and Vision for Environmental Justice is a celebration of our accomplishments as we continue to build a movement for a healthy and clean environment for all people. We will have a keynote address from Omoyele Sowore, a journalist and an activist from Nigeria who fought against the Chevron Corporation. We will also honor individuals and organizations that are fighting valiantly for environmental and social justice. These honorees are:

• PODER San Francisco- People Organizing to Defend Environmental and Economic Rights
• East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice
• Youth for Environmental Justice
• Marleen Quint - Richmond Community Member
• Bertalina Chavac – South East L.A. Community Member

We are excited to host the 30th anniversary celebration of Communities for a Better Environment. Thirty Years of Resistance, Hope and Vision for Environmental Justice will be held Thursday, October 30, 2008 at the City Club of San Francisco, 6 – 10pm.
