Directed by Werner Hertzog
Debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, this new documentary epic focuses on the Chauvet Cave in southern France and its ancient cave paintings. Shot with high definition cameras, this film brings the beauty and mystery of these paintings to life in way never experienced. In southern France, about 400 miles from Paris, the limestone cave contains a wealth of early paintings, perhaps from as long ago as 32,000 years. Few were ever allowed access to this area, but maverick German filmmaker Werner Herzog obtained permission to film and did so in 3D -- a process that enabled him to convey the textured surfaces on which the figures are drawn, as well as the shape and depth of the cave's stalagmites and other structures. This astonishing documentary not only provides exquisite visual detail of the cave (as Herzog explores it) but uses the visuals as a springboard to broader philosophical questions about the nature of humanity itself and the transience of humankind.
