Cathedral of St. John the Divine Celebrates Halloween with Festivities for All Ages October 21, 2011

THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT JOHN THE DIVINE CELEBRATES HALLOWEEN WITH FESTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES

To celebrate All Hallows Eve the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street), Manhattan, will host a variety of festive activities for visitors of all ages.

Brave souls can enjoy a screening of the classic film The Phantom of the Opera (1925) accompanied by the Cathedral’s Great Organ played by Timothy Brumfield on Friday, October 28th at 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Immediately following each screening, Ralph Lee and the Mettawee River Theater Company present the Procession of the Ghouls. The full stretch of the nave is taken over by Mr. Lee’s fantastic creatures of the night. Guests are encouraged to brace themselves for ghostly mischief and ghoulish tricks. Seats closest to the action are for the bravest at heart, who may find themselves directly confronted with the hooked nose of a demon, the mossy nails of a witch, or the bulging cheeks of a ghoul. Tickets are available for $20.
The youngest Cathedral visitors are invited to participate in the “Morning of the Gargoyles” on Saturday, October 22nd from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. The morning begins with a reading of Eve Bunting’s Night of the Gargoyle. Kids can then wander down to the workshop to assemble clay gargoyles, skeleton creatures and paper gargoyle masks. Tickets are $8 per child with an accompanying adult.

During the days leading up to Halloween, October 25th, 26th 27th and 28th at 5:00 PM and October 30th at 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, children ages 12 and up can creep into the Cathedral’s crypt for a guided Crypt Crawl. Participants will learn the origins of Halloween as the Celtic New Year celebration and trace its transformation into All Hallows Eve. All Crypt Crawl tours meet for registration at the Visitor Center inside the Cathedral entrance. Space is limited and reservations are recommended. Tickets are available for $20, $15 for students/seniors.
