Vivek Shanbhag's "Bahumukhi" is a contemporary play, set in the present times. It speaks of the media that exercises a great influence on our everyday lives and of the collapse of relationships with the illusions it spins. Throughout the play, you have people masquerading different identities; they are shrewd manipulators who convincingly cause a blurring collision of history, narrative and memories. Such a blurring makes it difficult to separate history from story, tragedy of personal life from strategy deployed as means of livelihood. It is a murky world where it becomes difficult to tell who's making use of whom. The play unveils in multiple layers, the world as it unfolds before a journalist who goes looking for a sensational story. "Bahumukhi" is hence a modern mythology that carries in it the tensions of the present, modes of life that are reduced to cinders in the huge pit of fire called city, and an intensity that is born in the impermanence of life.
