'Cartas a una madre' (Letters to a Mother), based on a true story, recounts the life of a Venezuelan teenager who was sent to the U.S. by her father to cover up the shame of an unplanned pregnancy. The girl worked for many years as a nurse, married a Vietnam war veteran and changed her name to Vicky Bauer. Mrs. Bauer, now an older woman in declining health, is haunted by her past represented in the characters of Vicky (Mrs. Bauer in her middle age years) and Bestalia (the young teenage girl). Her loyal caretaker, to keep her happy, makes up letters as if they were from Ms. Bauer's lost son. The hope of a visit from her son is what keeps her alive.
