"Artymiw feels deeply and knows how to communicate her feelings. She stirred her audience repeatedly" (Los Angeles Times on Lydia Artymiw)

Flautist Carol Wincenc, violinist Hiroko Yajima, cellist Marcy Rosen, and pianist Lydia Artymiw join PCMS on Sunday, January 11 at the American Philosophical Society to play a program of Haydn, Wernick, Capanna, and Smetana. Described as "one of the world's great flutists" by United Press International, Carol Wincenc was First Prize Winner of the Walter W. Naumburg Solo Flute Competition, and has appeared as soloist with such ensembles as the Chicago, Saint Louis, Atlanta and London Symphonies; the BBC and Buffalo Philharmonics, the Saint Paul and Stuttgart Chamber Orchestras, and the New York Woodwind Quintet. Wencenc has also created and directed a series of International Flute Festivals in St. Paul, Minn, feturing such diverse artists as Jean-Pierre Rampal, Herbie Mann and the American Indian flutist R. Carlos Nakai.

Hiroko Yajima, described as an "artist of real distinction" by The New York Times, has built an impressive reputation as a recitalist, soloist with orchestra, and chamber musician. Yajima has participated in many summer festivals, including Aspen, Bravo Colorado, and Mostly Mozart, and is a regular senior artist at Marlboro. She has also been a guest artist at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and with the Juilliard Quartet. Cellist Marcy Rosen, as the third musician, has established herself as one of the most important and respected artists of our day. She made her concerto debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of eighteen and has since appeared with such noted orchestras as the Dallas Symphony, the Phoenix Symphony, the Caramoor Festival Orchestra, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in Carnegie Hall, among others. As a player of "passionate authority" (The New York Times) and a founding member of the world renowned Mendelssohn String Quartet, Rosen was Artist-in-Residence at the North Carolina School of the Arts and for nine years served as Blodgett-Artist-in Residence at Harvard University. With the Mendelssohn String Quartet she tours annually throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

Pianist Lydia Artymiw is hailed by The New York Times as "a compelling musical personality with the unusual ability to reach out and touch her listeners." Artymiw, who began piano studies at the age of four in her native Philadelphia, performed at age eight (as a student of Freda Pastor Berkowitz) with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Artymiw has appeared with over one hundred orchestras worldwide, including those of Boston, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Los Angeles and has also gained international recognition through solo recitals and extensive chamber music performances. She is a member of the Steinhardt-Artymiw-Eskin Trio and has participated in nearly all the major festivals, including Marlboro Music, Aspen, Caramoor, Mostly Mozart and the Hollywood Bowl.
