Carmel Special Census Needs Applicants

Carmel, IN – Carmel has received about 100 applications for temporary employment with the Special Census. More than 500 applicants are needed before the federal Census office will begin the interviewing process. In order to increase the number of applicants, a special Census booth will be set up at the Carmel Farmers Market Saturday, June 2nd from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and at the Summer Family Concert Series at the Gazebo Wednesday, June 6th at 7 p.m.

The City of Carmel will conduct a Special Census later this summer/early fall to allow Carmel to update its population count. This will give Carmel greater access to tax dollars distributed according to population. This could mean as much as $3 million additional tax revenue for Carmel. This additional revenue from the state could be used for road projects, education for our children, programs for our senior citizens, and other important services for our community.

This census will be conducted by workers who will go door to door, gathering information on 7 subjects: name, household relationship, gender, date of birth, age, Hispanic or Latino origin, and race. The Census Bureau never releases information that identifies you or your household. An adequate work force is necessary if there is to be an accurate count. Applicants are still needed to fill the positions of crew leaders (in charge of specific geographical groups of enumerators), census enumerators (go door to door and ask a series of questions about each person living in the household) and clerical staff (doing office work to keep track of information).

Census workers will normally be assigned neighborhoods near their own homes, and areas with which they are familiar. Compensation will include an hourly wage of $14.00 for crew leaders, $12.50 for enumerators and $9.00 for clerical staff. Mileage will be compensated for all three jobs as well. All applicants must be U.S. Citizens and 18 years of age (16 and 17-year-old high school graduates may qualify for clerical positions if they meet state employment requirements). Workers need to be available evenings and weekends between 20-40 hours a week. A three day training session is also required. Enumerators and crew leaders must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

For more information, please contact Kim Kauffman at 571-2467. You can also visit the Census link at the bottom of Carmel’s homepage www.carmel.in.gov. Please contact Kim Kauffman before filling out an application because the federal Census office will send employment testing notices to applicants from our database.
