DANCE ANTI-DANCE
Join Bowerbird for a night of power electronics and mysterious dance installations as we feature new synth music by New York based Carlos Giffoni, the shredding noise of Philadelphia composer Alex Nagle, and the haunting PIMA Group, featuring dancer / choreographer Melisa Putz.

Carlos Giffoni hardly needs an introduction in experimental music circles, but in year where he takes a break from his hugely successful No Fun Fest to focus on other projects, you just can’t wait to find out how the synth magician reinvents himself. Carlos lists japanese noise, early industrial, rock, and joropo among his influences, and his list of past collaborators is amazing: Jim O’Rourke, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Nels Cline, Chris Corsano, Peter Rehberg, Chuck Bettis, Nautical Almanac, Smegma, lds, Lasse Marhaug, Merzbow, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Awesome.

Both Alex Nagle (ex-Normal Love, Tweeter, CSection) and PIMA Group (featuring dancer / choreographer Melisa Putz) should also be familiar to Bowerbird audiences.

You might be attempted to compare Alex’s music to some kind of amalgamation of harsh noise, super virtuosic guitar shredding, and modern new-complexity composition – and if you can find that in your ear – that’s not a bad place to start – but you’re really not giving his unique creations their due attention. We know his stuff tends to be super loud and harsh – but it’s actually very nuanced and subtle– in a way that you might even call beautiful. And besides, this is the first time Alex is performing a solo project under his own name (at least in a long time) – so you have to be pretty psyched for what’s going to happen.

For us the first time we saw PIMA Group was like seeing a Rothko for the first time or hearing Feldman for the first time. It changes you forever and from that moment on you have a different expectations. PIMA Group so clearly defies categorization – it’s not dance, its not theater, its not music, and yet its all of these things. Every piece they make is completely unique, so peculiar to the moment and space when it’s performed we can’t help but invite them back again – just so you can see what they might do. And PIMA Group always delivers.
