Cantata Singers, one of the nation’s leading ensembles dedicated to performing and commissioning choral-orchestral works, closes its season Friday, May 14th at 8:00pm in Boston’s Jordan Hall (30 Gainsborough Street) with a performance of the 80-minute Schwanengesang, or “Swansong,” of Heinrich Schütz (1585 – 1672). (A free pre-concert lecture led by David Hoose will take place at 7:00pm at the New England Conservatory’s Keller Room.) As part of its season-long dedication to Schütz, Cantata Singers fittingly presents the composer’s culminating work which serves as his final, brilliant reflection on life. In 13 movements for two four-voice choruses, instruments and continuo, Schwanengesang is an extensive 17th century setting of the 176-verse Psalm 119, the celebratory Psalm 100 and, to cap it off, the German Magnificat.
