Portland's charity screenings of Serenity will be held on Friday, June 22 (an evening show), and Saturday, June 23 (a matinee), at the historic Hollywood Theatre. While primarily a benefit for Equality Now, 10% of ticket proceeds will go to support the Women's Film Initiative.

Tickets are $13 in advance and $18 at the door on the day of show. Friday, 22 June, doors open for pre-screening activities at 7:00 PM and programming begins at 8:00 PM. Saturday, 23 June, doors open for pre-screening activities at 1:00 PM and programming begins at 2:00 PM.

This event is part of an unprecedented worldwide effort (conceived in 2006 right here in Portland) involving fan-organized charity screenings in nearly fifty cities in Australia, Austria, Canada, England, France, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, and the United States, centered around the three-day period of June 22 through June 24.

"There are two ways to fight a battle like ours. One is to whisper in the ear of the masses, try subtlely and gradually to change the gender expectations and mythic structures of our culture. That's me. The other is to step up and confront the thousands of atrocities that are taking place around the world on an immediate, one-by-one basis. That's a great deal harder, and that's Equality Now. It's not about politics; it's about basic human decency." -- Joss Whedon

Serenity
A passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on the run. An assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship, they find themselves in an action-packed battle between the relentless military might of a totalitarian regime who will destroy anything - or anyone - to get the girl back and the bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of space. But, the greatest danger of all may be on their ship.

Equality Now
Equality Now was founded in 1992 to work for the protection and promotion of the human rights of women around the world. Working with national human rights organizations and individual activists, Equality Now documents violence and discrimination against women and mobilizes international action to support their efforts to stop these human rights abuses.

Women's Film Initiative
A project of Film Action Oregon, the Women's Film Initiative was established in recognition that few role models exist for women interested in pursuing filmmaking behind the camera. The Women’s Film Initiative is comprised of four programs: INSPIRE: A Program for Young Women Filmmakers; The Faerie Godmother Film Scholarships; The Women’s Vision Film Grants; and The Portland Women's Film Festival.

PDX Browncoats
Portland's own group of Firefly and Serenity fans, which began meeting regularly during the run-up to the film's release in 2005. They conceived the original (and then-unprecedented) worldwide charity screening effort held in 2006.
