CANOPY artist reception April 13, 2007

New work by fiber artist Elyce Elder and painter Karen Woods. Inspired by 19th century couture, Elyce Elder creates fantasy tents that embody ideas of protection, covering, and adornment. Taking cues from 19th century bathing tents in form, they can be viewed as stand-ins for figures, but also explore ideas of grief, memory, spiritual protection, fear and aloneness. Elder’s work is deeply spiritual while being meticulously crafted with an exceptional eye for detail.

Karen Woods paints directly from observation with a vision for light and shadow that brings clarity and beauty to the urban landscape. She is on a year-long sabbatical in Indianapolis from her home in Boise, Idaho and brings fresh eyes to downtown architecture, traffic and natural elements.

Elder’s and Woods’ works, while visually divergent, share a peacefulness and tranquility that transcends medium.

Between 7:00 & 7:15 Urban Garden Performing Arts presents dancer Nina Ryan performing in response to the sculptural work of Elyce Elder in the Harrison Center's main gallery.
