Into the happy household of the Reverend Morell and his wife Candida comes the aristocratic and waiflike poet, Eugene Marchbanks. On one hand is Morell, who knows all about the spiritual side of love, but perhaps not so much about his own wife's needs. On the other is the young poet who believes he truly knows the heart. Although Marchbanks is a foolishly petulant and romantic youth, he exposes the complacency of the Morell's marriage, and the result is the kind of sharp satire and brilliant wit for which George Bernard Shaw is so beloved.
