The Lions of Asia in History: Animal-Human Interaction through the Ages Lecture by Divya Bhanusinh Chavda Tuesday, May 12, 6-7pm Thousands of lions once roamed the Asian continent from Palestine to eastern India. Only about 400 remain, and they are confined to the Gir Forest National Park of western India. Author, naturalist, and economist Divya Bhanusinh Chavda will discuss the history of the Asian lion from the ancient Assyrian period to the British Empire and the current conservation efforts under way to ensure its survival and prosperity. Free and open to the public in the Geological Lecture Hall, 24 Oxford Street. Dr. Bhanusinh obtained a M.S. in Economics from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Pune for his groundbreaking research on the cheetah in India. He is a former Vice-President of the Bombay Natural History Society, President of the World Wide Fund for Nature-India, and is a member of the National Board for Wildlife the highest advisory body of India chaired by the Prime Minister.
