Music From the Big House
DOCUMENTARY | JULY 18 | 7PM
90 min run time | English

From internationally award-winning director Bruce McDonald (Pontypool), Music From the Big House tells a story of redemption through the power of music set in one of the most historically unforgiving and volatile environments in the United States: Louisiana State Maximum Security Penitentiary. Canadian “Goddess of the Blues” Rita Chiarelli explores the roots of her genre by taking a pilgrimage to “The Farm,” a former slave plantation and now the largest maximum security prison in America, where she puts on a performance alongside the musician inmates serving life-sentences. The transformative and uplifting properties of music are clear in this moving documentary that explores the birth of Blues.

Following the showing of the film, Rita Chiarelli herself will be available to take questions from the audience followed by an intimate, yet powerful short performance by the award-winning 3-octave singer.

“A documentary about jail house blues, one that gets the soul singing and the foot tapping.” – Quiet Earth, Marina Antunes
