“Be careful what you throw away in terms of old post cards, autographs, movie memorabilia, historic photos, books and similar items. They may have value, and we can help you find out”. California’s Capital Show, Antique Paper, Post Card and Collectibles to be held at the Scottish Rite Center, 6151 H St January 17-18. Hours are 10 to 5 on Saturday (Jan. 17) and 10 to 4 on Sunday (Jan. 18). Admission is $5.00 or $6.00 for both days. “If what you have are family treasures, we can possibly provide background information for you, along with tips for storing and preservation”.

The show will feature over a million post cards ranging in price from 25 cents to several hundred dollars. Photo cards from long vanished towns, signed artist, and elaborate holiday cards are also much in demand. Searching through the endless boxes of cards to be on display is serious business to collectors looking for choice items to add to their collection.

Letters with historical content such as the California gold rush, Civil War, and other events are much in demand. Autographs signed photos, and letters of famous people or entertainment figures are eagerly sought. Value depends on condition, content. and demand. For example, a plain signature of George Washington or Abraham Lincoln will bring several thousand dollars, while autographs of some popular entertainment figures are so common they can be had for twenty dollars or less.

Show visitors with paid admission are offered free verbal appraisals for items they bring in. The show management and most dealers will provide this service. Sometimes visitors want to get more information on a family treasure, while others are happy because they turned some unwanted attic accumulation into cash. There is no obligation to sell the items brought in for appraisal.

The show, the first of its kind in Sacramento, was established in 1986 as a retirement project by retired teachers, Rudy and Natalie Schafer. Rudy passed away last year, but his daughter Charlotte Wager and her husband Bob are now involved and will eventually carry on the event which has become one of the most respected shows of its kind on the west coast.
