A restaging of Twyla Tharp’s alluring Torelli is the centerpiece of this year’s December concert from The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at CalArts. Tharp’s 1971 ensemble piece, which follows the course of a day in the country, begins in silence with a set of everyday, matter-of-fact movement phrases before developing a “rustic humor” as the dancers build improvisations to the Baroque elegance of Giuseppe Torelli’s Concerto in D Minor. Also on the program are the premieres of new works choreographed by CalArts faculty Laurence Blake and Andre Tyson. Blake’s Rite explores interplay between the genders, while Tyson’s dArk Matter questions assumptions about reality and ponders the unknown forces that act upon human lives.
