This course focuses on unique and exciting communities in Tehran. It examines artistic and cultural representations of life, love and loss and reflects the dignity displayed by artists and intellectuals living in the Iranian capital. Through art and ideas this course will introduce the complex and sometimes paradoxical nature of life in Tehran. Participants will encounter inspiration and despair; pleasure and anguish; traditional themes and modern innovation; the role of men and the challenges of women. The history of Iran represents some of the greatest highs experienced by a culture, yet Iranians have had to sustain the most crushing lows that fortune distributes. Regardless of the situation, Iranian art and culture has always returned to surprise and impress the world with new expressions of the same passion and cultural imprint that we recognize as characteristically Iranian.
