4117 Overland Avenue
Culver City, California 90230

In order to raise awareness on the human rights atrocities currently plaguing Burma and to celebrate the rich cultural traditions of their homeland, Southern California Burmese community and supporters of free democratic Burma will gather at the Veteran Memorial Building at 4117 Overland Avenue in Culver City at 12:00pm-5:00pm.

Pro-democracy activists in Los Angeles will celebrate Burmese National Day on Sunday with calls for national reconciliation, an end to military domination and the release of all political prisoners and Aung San Suu Kyi.

The event will celebrate the 86th anniversary of Burmese students' pro independence move against the British in 1920. It is a day steeped in political significance, commemorating the boycott by Burmese university students to protest the Rangoon University Act of 1920 under the British colonial rule that restricted higher education to
the privileged few.

Los Angeles is the home to over 30,000 Burmese refugees and immigrants, the largest population of Burmese expatriates in the world. A military junta had seized control of their country in 1988, having brutally crushed the nationwide pro-democracy student movement and popular uprising.
