A profoundly affecting and comic story that chronicles the human capacity for adaptability, fortitude and mapmaking, Iain MacLeod's 'I Was a Beautiful Day' is set in a psychiatric hospital. Dan, a veteran of the first Gulf war, maps the legends and personal memories of his native Hebrides with exhaustive detail. Lube, a fellow resident of the hospital, both infuriates and amuses him with preposterous fantasies about escape. One day they learn of an event that will change their lives, and, on that same day, Anne arrives. Their connections take all three on a journey that lands them in a very different place than where they started.
