Brian Dettmer, "Postoperative," altered books and cassette tapes, & James F. Cleary, B.F.A., "Wisenheimer's Disease," photomontages @ the International Museum of Surgical Science

February 2 through April 20, 2007
Opening Reception for the Artists (Free and Open to the Public): Friday, February 2, from 5 to 8 pm

Both these artists modify medical media--Brian Dettmer with the meticulous precision of a neurosurgeon and James F. Cleary with the evident glee of a mad scientist.

“Postoperative” features a variety of objects that have gone under Dettmer’s knife, including 11 dissected books, as well as a skull and a full-size, anatomically correct human skeleton that the artist molded from cassette tape shells.

“Wisenheimer’s Disease” comprises a series of 40 photomontages depicting Cleary’s apocalyptic vision of humankind’s degeneration resulting from “Do It Yourself Homo Improvement.”

These exhibitions are the latest in the Museum’s “Anatomy in the Gallery” series, which has showcased medically themed contemporary art in quarterly paired exhibitions since 1998.

Museum Hours: Tues-Sat 10 am-4 pm
Admission: $8, $4 for students and seniors, Tuesdays free
