Written by François Truffaut and photographed by New Wave legend Raoul Coutard, with no less a crime specialist than Claude Chabrol as technical advisor, Godard’s jazzy riff on American Film Noir features iconic performances from Jean-Paul Belmondo, as the on-the-run Bogart-inspired small-time hood, and Jean Seberg as his American, Herald Tribune-hawking girlfriend, who ultimately betrays him. With a pace that’s non-stop, thanks to its startling new editing techniques, BREATHLESS reinvented the grammar of movies and almost instantly changed the course of international filmmaking.

For this 50th anniversary release, Rialto has made new 35mm prints from a restored negative supervised by Coutard – the first restoration in the film’s history. Rialto has also added completely revised English subtitles, capturing Godard’s playful language like never before.

BREATHLESS will be co-presented by San Francisco Film Society. Guest Speaker and Programmer Rod Armstrong will introduce both evening shows on Friday, July 23.

Landmark Theatres will also give away a $75 gift certificate for Le Central on the first evening show, July 23. Le Central, San Francisco’s oldest French bistro started in 1974. Located in the Financial District, Le Central’s address is 453 Bush Street, San Francisco CA, 94108.

Rialto Pictures has collaborated with fashion label Rodarte for the 50th anniversary release of BREATHLESS. Rodarte has created two limited edition t-shirts inspired by BREATHLESS. Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy collaborated with graphic designer Patrick Li to create a new iconic poster for the international 50th anniversary release.

“BREATHLESS still feels entirely original. It still has the power to defy conventional expectations about what a movie should be while providing an utterly captivating movie going experience... Much as it may have influenced what was to come later, there is still nothing quite like it. Even at 50, it is still cool, still new!” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times

“I've seen the fiftieth-anniversary restoration of BREATHLESS, and it's revelatory! The images yield up details hitherto imperceptible in the prints that were available until now.” – Richard Brody, The New Yorker

“Fifty Years on, still the newest movie in town!” – John Powers, Vogue

“Made with such exceptional energy that it retains its freshness and élan 50 years later... And if there is one thing that hasn't dated a bit, it's the star power of Belmondo and Seberg, he the picture of drop-dead hipster insouciance and she, the ultimate innocent siren. Seeing them puts you in mind of one of BREATHLESS most famous quotes, when Melville's character says his goal is 'to become immortal and then die.' This is one cast and one film that has achieved exactly that.” – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

The film’s running time is 90 minutes; the film is not rated. In French; fully subtitled in English.
