ART EXHIBITION FEATURING NEW WORK BY CLARE JUDITH BOWERS AND ALISON KENDALL

Geography, a man-made construct to describe and explain a part of the natural world, exemplifies the human tendency to divide, delineate, organize and consider oneself with respect to the surrounding world. We are bound to each other by our shared environments and bound to the environment by the simple fact that we dwell within it. Both artists are provoked by these connections and seek to express the wildness, beauty, awe and devastation that comes with being a separate, yet complete part of nature.

Alison Kendall draws from her training as a marine biologist and science illustrator to reflect upon technical mastery and resilience of the natural world. Enamored by the instrumentation and adventurings of 18th century naturalists and explorers, her work examines the intersection of modernity and ecology, incorporating traditional modes of scientific presentation with a dreamy nostalgia. Adaptation and resistance are central themes in her work, which explores the place of nature in the face of industrialization and technological advancement.

Alison's paintings and illustrations have appeared in various publications and venues including Scientific American, Make and Craft magazines, textbooks, roadside coastal installations and Bay Area galleries such as 111 Minna and Mina Dresden. Clare Judith Bowers incorporates chance and spontaneity into her work, generally painting without a set plan in mind. This allows her to express something brighter, more meaningful and more complex than a specific story or perspective. Her paintings and collages of animals, geometric shapes, straight lines and loose patterns incorporate found papers, old house paint and scrap wood. Inspired by nature and our interconnection with it, her imagery conveys a sense of solidity and order intertwined with wildness, beauty and heartache.

Clare has shown her work at several galleries in the Bay Area, Seattle, Portland and Salt Lake City, including Grass Hut, Henry Art Gallery and Mina Dresden. She can be reached at [email protected].
