Borderlands Artists Consortium, a group whose members span the Surrey-Hants borders, is presenting an exhibition entitled Borders at the Allen Gallery in February.

The theme is interpreted in a fascinating variety of ways, in relation both to subject matter and to form and technique. One artist writes of her interest in allotments and the different spaces and borders which they occupy; another of flower-borders and the magical spaces created by her mother s garden, which are re-created in memory. Others, focussing on technique, describe how their work evolves as borders form within the layering of images on paper, or from the growth of moulds and cultures on chamois sculptures.

A different interpretation takes borders in its political or geographical sense, focussing on the ambiguous messages of unity or division that can be evoked by badges and coats of arms. Yet again, the idea of borders can also suggest the absence of boundaries and restrictions, especially in relation to the artist and his or her way of working. Each artist is exploring the theme in a unique and individual way, whether through 2D or 3D media.
This is a show, which is at Alton s Allen Gallery in Church Street from 6 27 February, includes a wide range of imaginative diversity so will appeal to everyone.

The Allen Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm and admission is free.
