The Kalevala: Adaptations of the Finnish National Epic

You are invited to attend the spring season of the Kreft Arts Program at Concordia University. The Books & Coffee series is typically held in the afternoon within the historic Earhart Manor on the university's campus. Refreshments are provided.

Event Description:
A discussion of the influence and adaptations of The Kalevala, from Tolkien to current children’s books, Louhi, Witch of North Farm retold by Toni De Gerez, pictures by Barbara Cooney, and The Maiden of Northland, A Hero Tale of Finland by Aaron Shepard, illustrated by Carol Schwartz, and the film, The Day the Earth Froze. The influence of The Kalevala is mirrored in music by Jean Sibelius, and scenes from The Kalevala permeate Finnish art from the past into today.
