BLUE NOTE JAZZ
FREE ADMISSION

Blue Note jazz started when Liverpool Jazz chose Heart and Soul as its first venue for a resident jazz band.

Liverpool Jazz work to promote jazz in Liverpool and secure venues for jazz musicians. For more information about their activities and events, see the Liverpool Jazz website, at liverpooljazz.org

It was pure coincidence that, when Victor Greenberg from Liverpool jazz first visited Heart and Soul to discuss a jazz residency, he recognised the building and realised that in a previous incarnation the building housed the Basement Club where he listened to jazz in the 50s.

As the building subsequently fell into dereliction, I don't know if that is a good or bad omen and given the irregular attendance for this night, despite the talent on offer, I still don't know.

Anyway, for those who do want to give us a go,Heart and Soul's resident jazz trio and guest form a quartet playing jazz standards and classics, with Tim Harvey on Heart and Soul's REAL piano, Hugo Harris on double bass and Burkhart on drums plus special guest on saxaphone, trumpet or vocals.

Tim is a talented keyboard player and teacher who is dedicated to bringing music into the community. His organisation Myriad jazz strives to achieve that. For more information about Tim and his projects go to the Myriad website,at www.myriadtheatre.com.

When Blue Note first started, Tim played an electronic keyboard.Though remarkably realistic it was a bit wearing on the ear and when Tim felt an overwhelming compulsion to hit the weird and wonderful effects buttons, there was no stopping him. To be truthful, I needed any excuse to drag my old battered Broadwood piano out of storage ,so now the the jazz band features a REAL piano.Retro or what? My old piano having travelled the country sings again at last, in more professional hands than mine.

Hugo is a young and very much upcoming musician who plays with a variety of Liverpool bands ,rapidly attracting wider recognition from the public and record companies. If you want to know the latest happenings in the Liverpool music scene , come and speak to Hugo or just come and listen as his bass does the speaking.

As for Burkhart, well, he is just sweet Burkhart. He hides his talent, sometimes literally ,by trying to dissapear behind the potted palm which sits beside his drum kit.His playing is subtle and exact bringing together all the elements of the band without overwhelming them.

As for the guests , they are like lovely bon bons. You never know what flavour you are going to get.

Music while you eat or pop in for a drink and listen to these really talented musicians.
